The Hippy who designed it didnt leave enough room in the fuselage to fit a battery in

Current Projects:: Idea's for hot wire bows
This thread already has a number of suggestions for wire alternatives. (See post #2 and my recent posts.)

As far as a different power supply (other than what is already posted here)it would depend on what voltage and amperage you need for the length and resistivity of the wire you end up using. The problem with using a 12 volt battery as you are is that you don't have fine tuning ability to control your wire temperature. You could add a DC to DC converter with a variable resister to the output of the battery and have very fine control. The higher the wattage rating of the convertor, the higher the cost.

This one varies from 12 to 24 volts and up to 24 amps! It's $50 plus tax and shipping. http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=2073610

I think you could also use a converter like these on the output side of a 12 volt switching power supply out of a junk computer. (These are often free.) IF you can find a high wattage ATX powersupply you could get around 10-12 amps (or a little more) out of it. I'm almost certain you can't use these power supplies with either a variac or an SCR type wall dimmer on the input side - don't try it without researching it first! Here are a couple of links to great articles that show how to modify these: http://web2.murraystate.edu/andy.batts/ps/PowerSupply.htm#levels

http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-a-Comp ... ply-to-a-Lab-Power-Supply

Old "dumb" 12 volt battery chargers can be used with variacs and work very well (as long as you don't make the mistake I did). Craigslist is a good source for these, but the variacs are about a $100 on eBay.

Here is a nice looking surplus power supply for about $100 ready to use:
http://asset-liquidators.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=2636586
